Downing Street is the heart of British Government, with number 10 being the most famous address – the Prime Minster’s Office and Official Residence. Number 11 on the street is the residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The origin of the street’s name comes from when it was commissioned by Sir George Downing in the 1680s on the site of Hampden House.

Downing Street is not publicly accessible and is guarded by black gates and barriers, as well as armed police officers. You may take photos from Whitehall looking into Downing Street but cannot go any closer.
