Cleopatra’s Needle is one the oldest things displayed outdoors publicly in London – it is between 3000 and 3500 years old. The Needle is situated on the Victoria Embankment, a short stroll from Embankment station.

Cleopatra’s Needle is an ancient Egyptian obelisk presented to the UK by Egyptian ruler Muhammad Ali to commemorate the victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1819. The Needle has two “twins” in Paris and New York City.

Fun Fact: Curiously, the sphinxes at the base of the obelisk were placed incorrectly and instead of looking outwards to “guard” the needle, they are just staring at it instead.
